OEE is a very effective way to measure output of equipment in terms of availability, performance and quality factors. In broader view OEE is indirectly proportional to set up and changeover time, if availability and quality parameters are constant. In this article we review performance of OEE in various product environment. The end of the goal of measuring equipment performance with OEE or any other tool is improving output. In some of the industries for specific product equipment performance measurement with one entities is not sufficient, we should go for more than one entities for accurate analysis.
Before we proceed, if you don’t know ways to measure equipment performance review attached article below.
Content
- Factor affecting parameters of OEE.
- Performance of OEE in mass production.
- Performance of OEE in batch production.
- Performance of OEE in job shop production.
- Overview for Analyze operational performance with OEE.
In this article we discuss various OEE performance with various situations.
There are three types of production system such as mass production, batch production and job shop production. We are trying to understand performance of OEE in each category of production. Before we proceed further let’s try to understand performance affecting parameters with overall equipment effectiveness.
- Cycle time of product. (value added time & non value added time)
- Numbers of changeover and set up.
- Numbers of machine parts changeover.
- Equipment Downtime. (machine breakdown)
- Good product quality rate.
- Performance of manual activities. (operator)
- Operating speed of the equipment.
- Equipment available time.
As per above listed all the parameters are very important for improving overall equipment effectiveness. Now for better understanding of OEE applicability to measuring performance, we assuming cycle time, set up time and changeover time are variable parameters and other parameters are fixed for analysis purpose. All the OEE parameters are varies on timely basis but if we compare with three types of productions cycle time, set up time and changeover time are largely varying compare to all other parameters.
Now, we are trying to understand OEE performance with different production category.
Performance of OEE in different category
Performance of OEE in mass production
In this category products are producing on continuous basis. After larger volume producing, chances for product changeover and set up for new products. In this case measuring equipment performance with OEE is shown accurately because relative producing speed of each product is same and chances of product changeover is very less so no impacting on different product relative speed. Focused on different types of losses and efforts to minimize losses for improving operational performance with mass production category.
Performance of OEE in batch production
In this category products are producing on multiple batches with limited quantities so, certain period of time chances to set up and changeover for each product. When product is change certain period of time, product cycle time and its relative speed is also changes with the product.
Let’s understand OEE impact in batch production with the help of examples.
In batch production if we consider there are two products are running, product A and product B. we consider machine is semi- automatic and driven by the operator so each and every product certain loading and unloading time and its almost same for each product and also its included in product cycle time.
Product A (operational parameters)
Cycle time – 1.25 min
Equipment Relative Speed – 1m / min.
Product A (operational parameters)
Cycle time – 0.75 min
Equipment Relative Speed – 1.5m / min.
So, in short if we calculating overall equipment effectiveness in both the cases outcomes will be different for product A and product B, because OEE parameters are directly proportional to relative operational speed of equipment, cycle time and indirectly proportional to set up time and changeover time.
Performance of OEE in job shop production
In this category each product is different and its operational parameters is also different. When monitor overall equipment effectiveness in job shop production, its largely varies on day to day basis for analysis purpose. Cycle time, set up time, changeover time and operational relative speed are varying product to product in job shop production. In different product environment very difficult to analyze and predict consistence performance for OEE.
Overview for Analyze operational performance with OEE.
Many of the organizations just start measuring equipment performance with OEE but never deeply analyze with industries product. End of the month whenever they analyze weekly performance with OEE they are unable to find correct reason for OEE variation and blame lower level to improving equipment performance. The very better way is measure equipment performance with not only OEE analyze other comparable parameters with OEE performance periodically such as relative speed, cycle time, numbers of changeover and set up.
Now you got better understanding about how to analyze equipment performance with OEE.
Conclusion
In concluding part not only OEE measurement is important but also OEE data analysis is very much important. If any organization is fail to identify correct OEE improvement areas, they are fail to improve OEE so, for better analysis measure the equipment performance with more than one measurement parameters. For example, if you use OEE in mass production so there is not an issue in short term but if you use OEE in batch production it varies as per product changeover. Parallel maintain practice to analyze OEE parameters with numbers of set up, numbers of changeover and its relative speed of equipment. Certain parameters having some pros and cons, when we analyze multiple parameters at a time system weak performance will be directly visible and that is our area of action for OEE improvements.
